Settled in 1906, the town was named after Theodore Roosevelt. The area was previously known as Dry Gulch.

Roosevelt is the largest city in Duchesne County and a commercial hub of the Uintah Basin. As the regional center it provides shopping, schools, healthcare and other services to the surrounding communities of Cedarview, Ioka, Myton, Neola, Ballard and Fort Duchesne areas. Its shopping, hospital and entertainment also draw residents from Altamont and the Upper Country as well as Duchesne, Bridgeland and surrounding areas.
